When it rains it pours. Sometimes the irrigation even goes on. You know you are gong to get the calls from your properties asking what is going on with the sprinklers? They are going off in the rain! Something must be wrong. This is the number one concern I get managing properties. I decided to dig in and get some important facts about irrigation from the amazing Kerri R from Arizona Outdoor Solutions.
When you are troubleshooting an incident like this, consider that possibly there is no rain sensor, maybe its not working due to factors such as being coated in spider webs, not placed in direct contact with the rain. Often buildings and trees can shelter the sensors and prevent direct filling of the sensor. Is a wire cut? A Wi-Fi Hunter Industries panel that talks to the internet to get live weather can be set up to give accurate readings and works with satellites and weather Networks to real-time forecast weather and reduce water consumption. Not cheap, but wireless systems give you full hands-on control of your water usage and effectiveness of your watering.
If there is only a sprinkle of rain, but not enough to stop the scheduled watering (water schedule could be say, 25 minutes at a specific rate/gallon), remember that 1 minute of sprinkle is not enough to turn off the schedule, even though its enough to wet pavement.
The longevity of an irrigation system primarily depends on the quality of its components and the installation process. Using high-quality materials, such as durable pipes, correct fittings, and reliable valves, significantly increases the system's durability. Investing in a reputable brand or consulting with irrigation experts during the selection and installation process ensures a longer lifespan for your system.
Maintenance is key to extending the life of an irrigation system. Regular inspections and system checks are crucial to identifying and resolving any potential issues before they worsen. This includes checking for leaks, clogged nozzles, and ensuring proper water pressure and coverage. Timely repairs and adjustments are essential to prevent long-term damage and ensure that the system continues to function optimally.
Irrigation systems in areas with harsh weather conditions, like Canada for example are subject to both extreme heat and freezing temperatures, which can put strain on the components. Properly winterizing your irrigation system is an absolute necessity to ensure the protection of your system over the winter months.
On average, a well-maintained and quality irrigation system can last anywhere from 20 to 30 years. However, with some components requiring occasional replacement or upgrades, it is essential to monitor your system regularly and make necessary adjustments.
When is the best time to water, you ask? It is 3am-6am.
Why? Lawn maximizes water intake with little water loss occurring due to evaporation. Typically, it's the coolest part of the day.
What about Mid-Day watering? Evaporation is more prevalent; stronger winds may blow water off target. It is only recommended to water mid-day if extreme heat and drought is present during a new sod grow-in cycle.
Signs of Over Watering:
Blades wilt and feel limp
Increased mowing due to thick thatch growth
Lawn remains soggy for longer periods
Signs of Under Watering:
Blades wilt and feel crisp
Soil is dry
Grass does not quickly spring back when stepped on
Slower blade growth
Overwatering Can Lead to Disease - Be aware!
Too much water makes your lawn more susceptible to disease. Here’s what to look for to help keep your lawn healthy and green.
Rot can occur in the thatch in areas not getting direct sunlight
Root Rot – A fungal disease that starts at the root system, causing a lawn to turn yellow then brown
Moss – Usually appears in moist conditions in places with high levels of shade
Powdery Mildew – A disease that leaves a powdery-white substance over the lawn’s surface
Brown Patch Lawn Disease – A turf fungus that creates a brown circle in the lawn
The investment in an irrigation system pays off not only through water conservation and healthier landscapes, but also by providing you with many years of hassle-free and efficient irrigation.
